Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

“Diversity and inclusion are disruptive... we must think beyond ourselves.” – Marley Dias, 13-year-old founder of #1000blackgirlbooks

Defining Intersectionality

Intersectionality is a term first coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in the context of applying issues of black feminism to antidescrimination law. The term has become essential in understanding how systems of oppression interact and compound as they overlap. Discussions of intersectional inclusion reveal the potential pitfalls of diversity and inclusion initiatives that address groups in narrow categories without seeing the overlap between them.

For example, Crenshaw's work exposed a scenario in which a specific company on paper showed high rates of hiring female employees and black employees. However, a closer examination showed that the female employees were mostly white and the black employees were mostly male. Considering hiring practices intersectionally revealed that black women were still facing discrimination in the hiring process.
